Welcome to the 2023 Matchplay Championship for Tapps Island. This year we will be doing some stuff differently so please take the time to read this email entirely.
Tournament information:
- We have a full field of 32 players. There are 8 different groups of 4 players.
- All players will play each other in round robin. Each player will complete a minimum of 3 matches
- After round robin is completed, we will take the top 2 from each group to move into single elimination bracket play. Players will be seeded based on round robin score.
- If there is a tie for a spot for moving into the next round, the head to head matchup will determine who moves forward. If there is still a tie, I will total up the amount of holes won or lost by in their matches and the player with the highest +/- will move on. If there is still a tie, a coin flip will determine who moves to the next round.
- You will have until June 4th to play round robin matches. Please don't wait until the last minute to play your matches. Reach out via email to your opponents to schedule a time to play. Full Schedule:
Round | Players | End Of Round |
Round Robin | 32 | June 4th |
1 | 16 | June 25th |
2 | 8 | July 16th |
3 | 4 | August 6th |
4 | 2 | August 27th |
- Matches may be played anytime outside of normal men's club events. We have standing tee times at 7 am on weekend days. I encourage you to play your matches on those times. Those times are first come first served so make sure to get there early.
Playing your matches:
- Matches must be played at Tapps Island. Players must play the blue and white tees as they are laid out for the day. Matches may not be played on days where temporary greens are used.
- Matches must play the course as it is designed. If you run into a slow golf course please continue your match in the order of the golf course.
- You are welcome to play matches with other players or members in your group. Those players are not to act as advisors or referees in the match unless agreed upon by both players before the match. I also encourage you to ask non-competitors to putt after the match players have gone to reduce giving lines for putts.
- Handicaps: Players are awarded 80% of their handicap. I have provided everyone's course handicap and their 80% playing handicaps in an email to the groups. These handicaps will be used for the entirety of the round. Base the strokes off the lower of the 2 players. If player A is a 5 handicap and player B is a 10, player B will get a stroke on the 5 hardest holes on the golf course.
- Note: Double Strokes on a hole will not be given. If the difference in handicaps is greater than 18, only one stroke will be given to the higher handicap on all holes.
- Playing Match Play: I encourage all players to study the rules differences in match play vs stroke play. All players are responsible for knowing the rules. If there is a rules dispute, you must solve it within your group using the rule book. If an agreement cannot be made, please call Kameron at 253-249-5566
- Winning the match: All matches are 18 holes. During round robin, If there is a tie after 18 holes the match will end in a tie. No tiebreak holes will be played. During bracket play, players will need to work with the proshop to continue playing holes (starting on hole 1) until the tie is broken. If the course does not allow for play to continue, the match may be settled in 1 of 2 ways:
- Method 1: Schedule a time on another day for players to return to play a 9 hole match on the blue tees.
- Method 2: Have a third party flip a coin to determine a winner. The player with a lower handicap index will call heads or tails.
- Recording your matches: The winner of the match must send an email to Kameron cc'ing your partner to record the score. If it is a tie someone take the lead and send.
- Payouts: The payouts will be based on 32 paid players. The structure is below:
- 1st Place: $350
- 2nd Place: $250
- 3rd/4th: $200
- 5th/6th/7th/8th: $150
- Tapps Island Cup: The top 2 in the Matchplay Championship will receive an automatic entry into the Tapps Island Cup. Players will not receive any points toward the Tapps Island Cup for any other positions.
